Pennants are so hot right now, and it's so easy to achieve a multitude of looks.  Pick a theme and go with it!  Dinner party?  Girls' tea party?  Graduation, birthday or Father's Day?  Just choose your papers and add a few die cuts!  My mom is having a Summer Cherry themed tea party this weekend, so I cut a few of my favorite kitchen cherry die cuts and found some adorable paper, and voila!  This will make a great hostess gift and decoration - sure to spark some lively conversation!  Make butterfly or fairy pennants for your girl's bedroom or a baseball or character-themed set for your boy's bedroom.  Make a crafty-themed set for your scrapbooking area or spell out "Happy Birthday" with letters.  Make it teeny or make it big and sweeping!

Dimensions

Here are the exact shapes, sizes and colors I used, BUT you could make these any size you want.  You're only limited by your paper and mat size, so they could be up to about 11" tall.  I made mine small (4" tall), so to duplicate mine, size to the dimensions shown below (with "Keep Proportions" checked in the Shape Properties window).

Design Tips

  • I inked the edges of most pieces in brown.  This takes a few extra minutes, and it can be tempting to skip this step, but it’s worth doing.  It really ties everything together and adds to the vintage factor.
  • Almost all of the paper I used is from the Dear Lizzy line by American Crafts.  I love Dear Lizzy!!!  I used the Spring Collection, specifically Cheerful Cherry, Sweet Strawberry and Lazy Ladybug.  These are all double-sided and on the reverse side is the peach and sea green solid colors you see.
  • The red dots paper is by BoBunny, called Harvest Dot.  I love their dot papers, they're so richly colored and the dots are subtle, which is perfect for adding detail without grabbing too much attention.
  • I used red buttons and brads from Basic Grey for accents.  When I see their packages of buttons and brads that coordinate with paper packages, I can't resist.  Then the leftovers are nice to have on-hand - they came in handy for this project!  Since my theme is cherries, the cute red buttons echo the cherry look.
  • Since my pennants are small, I used embroidery floss to string them together.  It's doubled-up and knotted at each end and woven through the holes in the pennants.  I used a needle, which saved me some time.  Then I tied a muted vermillion-colored ribbon in a bow at each intersection of two pennants.  I left the bows kind of messy, which I like the look of.  Sort of "effortlessly cute."

Thanks for visiting, and I hope these pennants inspired you to create some of your own!  There are SO many ways to make them cute, and if you create some, we would love to see them in our forum!  ~Mary  🙂
